On Top Chef, the hardest challenge is always the same one.

“Make whatever you want.”

You’d think that would be the easiest. No rules, no constraints, total freedom. And yet… they spiral. Too many options, no clear starting point, and suddenly they’re second-guessing everything.

Making a cocktail can feel the same way.

If I walk up to my bar and start with something random like a pretty glass or an orange I want to use up, I can get to a good drink. I know what I’m doing.

I’m just working a lot harder to get there.

Because there’s no anchor.

The easiest, most dialed-in cocktails always start with something clear. A base spirit. A flavor direction. A very specific last sip I want someone to walk away with. Once that’s locked in, everything else has a place to go.

Brands work the same way.

When there’s no anchor, you end up doing more. Tweaking, rewriting, second-guessing, trying to make everything connect after the fact. The pieces are good. They just aren’t building on each other.

The brands that feel effortless have three signature elements doing a lot of the work:

🔸 Credibility Line — the sentence that makes someone instantly understand why you’re the one
🔸 Personality Descriptor — how it actually feels to be in your world
🔸 Signature Title — the name you claim that carries both

For me, that last one is Chief Brand Mixologist. It sets the tone before I say anything else and gives everything I create a throughline.

When these are clear, your brand has direction. You’re not starting from scratch every time you sit down to write or post or update something. It all builds.

Off to Scotland
